Greece Cyclades Islands
The islands of Mykonos and Santorini, part of the 30-island strong Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean, are probably the most renowned of all the Greek islands, acclaimed for their nightlife, shopping, restaurants and suntan opportunities. The vicious winds that sometimes sweep across these rocky, dusty islands do not deter the thousands of visitors, who fly in from Athens or ride the hydrofoils and ferries from Piraeus. The centre point of this island group is the tiny uninhabited isle of Delos: the ancient Greeks believed that the rest of the island chain slowly revolved around this stationary isle and hence the name, Kiklades or 'circling islands'. Most of the islands in the group are similar, with terraced towns of cubic whitewashed houses sporting coloured shutters sloping down to small harbours. The countryside generally offers a monastery or two and some ancient ruins. Some, like Folegandros, have small-scale agricultural operations. For the most though, villages are usually coastal and reliant on tourism or fishing.
